I’m Sassa.
I’m an Appalachian artist from West Virginia, working primarily in Huntington. I have a background in sculpture and painting, and my private studio practice is centered around oil painting and portraiture. My work connects me to my place, my people, and our history.
In recent years I’ve been most drawn to making art with people, not just for people. Through workshops, public art, and collaborative projects, my work makes art accessible and participatory while creating space for people whose stories are often overlooked to be included, represented, and celebrated. I love incorporating community-created pieces into my public work and creating opportunities for people to leave their mark on the places they call home.
I care deeply about helping shape a fuller story of Appalachia, especially when it comes to queer and trans Appalachians. We have always been here. We are coal miners, veterans, farmers, artists, caregivers, organizers, and change makers. We belong here.
Outside the studio, I co-founded Hoot & Holler, an inclusive community marching band in Huntington, West Virginia, with my husband Zachary because I believe art should be participatory, joyful, and accessible to everybody.
Feel free to reach out with questions, and thanks for stopping by.
