PRIVATE LESSONS

Working one on one with students is one of my absolute favorite things to do. I have worked privately with people from ages five to over ninety with a wide range of goals and interests. I typically work right alongside my students-if you’re painting, I’m painting beside you. This allows you the freedom to explore your work while having a real-time example of technique and application. I consider private lessons a time to not only practice a skill, but a time to dive as deep as you’d like to go into the work of being an artist. I’m open to private lessons with anyone, but here are some typical scenarios in which they’ve worked really well:

  • High school students in need of a portfolio for college entry or scholarship opportunities

  • Artists who are working on turning their passion into a career and need help with marketing, time management, online sales, pricing your work, website design, how to approach galleries, etc.

  • College art students who are looking for one on one help with projects or personal work

  • Any artist who feels stuck and wants to “level up” :)

  • Little ones who enjoy creating whose parents would like them to explore a variety of art-making methods and mediums without destroying their carpet :)

  • Retirees looking for a hobby.

  • Anyone who ever used to love art but had that one teacher who was a butthole and discouraged them. Let me help you return to your true creative nature. We can sculpt that teacher a big middle finger.

  • People currently in my class series who would like extra focus and assistance

  • People who are dealing with anxiety and would like to use art as a relaxation/meditation technique. *I am not a therapist, but have worked extensively in this way personally and with many others who have found it to be very useful*

  • Homeschool students who would like arts enrichment

For those who feel scared to leap: I REALLY LOVE helping total newbies who have an interest in art but feel hesitant or unsure of how to begin. If you have thought about joining a class, but feel ill-equipped or nervous, I would love to have private lessons with you! I do not subscribe to the idea of “talent”, and I have taught enough people (thousands!) to say for certain that anyone who wants to learn to create any kind of art can absolutely learn. Helping people to unravel the perfectionist mindset that keeps them from exploring their creativity is my specialty, and it is my honor to witness how accessing that creativity can change people for the better.

Private lessons are $50 an hour, and I do not work in sessions lasting less than a full hour due to the nature of the work, cleanup time, etc. I have some students I see for two hours a week, and some I see for an hour every other week. Lessons do include some basic supplies, but that varies. (For example, if I am working on drawing skills with a middle school student, I’ll have everything we need. A more advanced oil painter will need to bring their own supplies.) Every private student has their own small storage area to keep their personal supplies and their work.

I have very limited availability for lessons, and I give preference to those who lock in a regular meeting time with at least two hour-long sessions per month. I am open, if my schedule allows it, to do one or two sessions to see if it is a good fit for you, or to work on something short-term and specific. I am also exploring online Skype sessions, so let me know if that is something you are interested in. If you’d like to set up private lessons or have any questions, email me HERE. I’d love to work with you!
